The Importance of GFCI Outlets and Switches

GFCIs, or ground fault circuit interrupters, are designed to lessen the risk of electrocution. The ground fault circuit interrupters can detect when someone is about to experience an electrical shock and will immediately turn off the power to that particular outlet, preventing serious or fatal injuries.

A ground fault, defined by the National Electrical Code as "a conducting connection between any electric conductor and any conducting substance that is grounded or that may become grounded," occurs when electricity travels through a path that was not intended, such as through a person's body

A GFCI provides protection for individuals that are at potential risk of electrical shock. GFCIs are typically installed in locations like the following where electrical circuits may come into touch with water sources:

Kitchens: Generally, any outlet that is close to a countertop that is connected to the sink, as well as those near the sink, dishwasher, and coffee maker.

Bathrooms: Close to the toilet, the bathtub or shower, and the sink. A bathroom's outlets should mostly be GFCIs.

Laundry Room: Ground fault circuit interrupters should be used by both your washer and dryer in your laundry room.

Garage: If you use power tools, it's a good idea to have all GFCI outlets in your garage.

Outdoors: Outlets outside, particularly those close to swimming pools, or any other area where outlets are exposed to water.

Small Appliances: Many items, like hair dryers, curling irons, and electric shavers, to name a few, contain built-in GFCIs.

Make Sure Your GFCI Installation is Functioning Correctly

Even in small amounts, like 4 milliamps, the GFCI detects a change in the amount of electricity flowing into a circuit relative to the amount flowing out. Less than one-hundredth of a second passes before the GFCI responds and turns off (or trips the circuit shutting off the power flow).

The last thing you want is to get shocked without noticing the GFCI is malfunctioning, thus GFCIs need to be tested each month to make sure they are functioning properly. Before using seasonal power tools and outdoor equipment, make sure they are in good condition

Contact inteGreen Services for help from a qualified specialist if your home needs GFCIs installed or tested–especially if you are unsure how to proceed or feel uncomfortable doing it. Always choose safety over regret.
